FISHING REPORT 11-07-10

With a perfect few days to finish off the school holidays there were plenty out and about making the most of the sunshine. The beaches and the jetties were the most popular and only a few boats took advantage of the glassy calm conditions. Salmon make up most of the reports but the run of calamari is continuing and with the normal start to the calamari season only a month or so away its looking more like this season won’t actually finish and with the way calamari spawn and live it might become an all year round fishery in the future. I have had plenty of reports of calamari from the San Remo jetty and the sizes have been varied. Most of the calamari are being caught on the left side of the jetty close tho the beach and can often be seen swimming around. They are taking a variety of jigs with almost anything working in the shallows where the water is a bit clearer and the baited jigs far better in the deeper water. The baited jigs have also worked better on the beach in Cleeland bight off the beach near the public mooring buoys and there have been a couple of calamari around 1.5kg reported from during the week. Ventnor reports have slowed in comparison but I am not sure how many people have been down there fishing for them. I have also had a couple of reports from the few boats and kayaks that have been fishing in Cleeland bight with the calamari caught in the boats generally smaller than those being caught from the beach.

Only a couple of whiting reports this week, most from tortoise head area both in the shallow water on the banks on the run in tide and the deeper channel towards the turn of the tide. I also had a report from a local of a reasonable bag of whiting from Corinella all caught on bass yabbies.

Several days this week I watched birds feeding in the main channel at san remo presumably chasing salmon so if you are heading out in the boat, a drift casting a few small metal lures in the channel will be worth the effort. The other spot worth a try is in boy’s home channel as the salmon often travel through there heading towards Rhyll area.

The gummy reports have continued from the Temby point area with those fishing the corals reporting it to be very frustrating trying to get past the small gummies and the many other rubbish fish around at the moment. There is also an abundance of flathead around the corals area as well the problem is most of them are smaller than the baits being used.

Small salmon still the norm on all the beaches with none of those dark backed winter monsters showing up yet. The best I had reported during the week was 1.6kg from Kilcunda with the majority of the fish closer to 500 grams. There is a surf comp being held Sunday which will be too late for my report but hopefully with plenty of people fishing the beaches there will be some good reports filter back to the shop during the week. There have been a couple of small salmon showing up at the back beach in San Remo during the week mostly in the evening. I also had a report from an angler chasing salmon in the same area landing himself a couple of 42cm whiting as well as a better than average trevally all were caught on bluebait.
